these are some great posts, really enjoying them!

the frustrating aspect of bad managers is that they refuse to set clear standards and then trust their staff. it's the constantly shifting expectations, project scope, priorities, and a lack of concern about whether their musings are even feasible.

if they can't explain the organization's priorities and delegate, and also won't actually do the tasks, they're a barrier to effective work.

Great post! However, i would recommend to Ed reading the Meritocracy Trap or Tyranny of Merit to challenge the notion of the benefit of the ‘laser focus on money for tasks’. I think the notion that the middle management layer as a problem in our collective work culture needs a bit more clarification, particularly in light of consolidation of the intellectual and creative and well paid endeavors in our ‘meritocratic’ classes. I think this sort of mind set is related to the gig-ification of work, which we have seen is not beneficial to your average worker.
